ENGLISH 3 AP LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION
THE MODES PROJECT
In this project you will read and write across a selection of modes of discourse. You will 1) read many essays and take quizzes on your reading 2) understand the purpose, effect, and strategies particular to the modes, 3) see how these modes manifest in AP prompts, 4) learn to write rhetorical précis to synthesize and verify your reading, and 5) apply the conventions of the modes to your own writing.
THREE BASIC STEPS IN THE PROCESS:
Step One:
Read the assigned essay in THE COMPACT READER by the due date. Be prepared to take a reading quiz on the assigned essay.
Reading and Quiz Schedule
Description: “The Santa Ana,” page 79 Due________
Narration: “The Chase,” page 108 Due ________
Compare/Contrast: “Chromosomes in Common,” page 251 Due ________
Definition: “I Want a Wife,” page 276 Due ________
Cause and Effect: “Banana,” page 313 Due ________
Persuasion and Argument: “The Waste Generation,” page 345 Due ________
Step Two:
Read one of the two remaining essays in THE COMPACT READER and write a rhetorical précis based on it. Word process your précis, 12 point, double spaced. Each must be followed by an MLA style bibliographic citation.

Step Three:
Write four brief (2 pages maximum) papers on topics of your choice, each in a different mode.
Each paper should clearly demonstrate the distinct characteristics of the mode.
Each paper must be double spaced, word processed and have a creative title. Label each mode of development, but do not make this part of the title.
Choose a topic that is interesting to you. Topics that might work well include: shopping, a favorite sport, being vegetarian, being an omnivore, school, friends, teenagers, parents, grades, teachers, TV, dating, music, theater, hobbies, holidays, video games, Facebook, My Space, Twitter, siblings, religion, politicians, political parties. Be prepared to have your topics approved by the teacher (me!).
Before writing each mode, review the individual chapters in THE COMPACT READER for tips on purpose, audience, and writing strategies.
